ABOUT OUR CHOIR
Timbre was founded in 2018 by Joni Jaeken and Nienke Winters, two former students at Sint-Hubertuscollege in Pelt, now better known as the WICO Junior Campus. Although Joni and Nienke were still very young themselves, school choir Timbre at Sint-Hubertuscollege immediately became a great success, as no fewer than 35 enthusiastic boys and girls came together during lunch breaks to rehearse! Over the years, we performed several concerts as a school choir, including a Christmas concert to benefit The Warmest Week and our first musical 't Is een zwaar bestaan. Since 2020, Joni and Nienke have graduated and, due to the reforms within WICO, the group has been spread across different campuses. Fortunately, that didn't stop us from continuing to rehearse outside of school hours, and so a few months later the “schoolchoir Timbre” was renamed “Youth Choir Timbre”!
After a difficult start due to the various lockdowns and coronavirus measures, we finally performed our second musical, Wij blijven voortbestaan (We Will Continue to Exist), in October 2021. With this title, we wanted to make it clear that we are far from finished singing! Our third musical, Honey Honey, Here we go again, followed in September 2022, and our fourth musical, Our best summer, in September 2023. That title referred to our highlight of 2023: our trip to Rome! Timbre had been around for five years by then, and that called for a big celebration. After three camps in Belgium, we changed tack in 2023 and organized our first trip abroad. We also took on a new challenge, as we participated in the international choir competition Musica Eterna Roma for the first time. The results exceeded all expectations, as we achieved a gold diploma in the G2 category ‘equal-voiced youth choirs’! This experience left us wanting more, so in 2024 we participated in the European Music Festival for Youth for the first time. Here we were able to perform during the Happening and won First Prize in the category ‘equal-voiced youth choirs’! In September 2024, we performed our fifth musical, Shaken, at the Rydell Rock, which was followed shortly afterwards in February 2025 by our sixth musical, Rebelse Rellers. It was a busy year, because in the summer of 2025 we traveled to Denmark for the European Choir Games. There we won a silver medal. And our seventh musical is also on the way: in September 2025 we will shine on the stage of the CC Palethe with our brand new show Niemand heeft het beter dan een non! (It's good to be a nun!).
Youth Choir Timbre currently consists of 37 enthusiastic boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 20. This fall, we will also be performing a new musical, in which everyone's talent can be showcased. Our current repertoire consists of typical musical classics, supplemented with polyphonic compositions. In addition, we are very motivated to participate in various projects. You may have already seen us at the Levensloop in Hasselt, Vlaanderen Zingt, the Christmas market in Antwerp, the open house at WICO campus Neerpelt, the 4 seasons... and in October we can also add beVOICEd in Antwerp to this list.
